|The aim of this course is to give the Students a sound basic knowledge of Horticulture covering a range of aspects including seed growth, soil structure, teamwork, pest and disease, health and safety and how different areas of Horticulture can affect the Environment.
The whole course is completed via small projects. Within these units the students will have to pass identification tests on a variety of seed and weed varieties, learn what tools are used for the correct tasks and how to maintain them correctly. They look at the structure of soil and its importance as well as the benefits of composting and good husbandry of plants through from seed to harvest. They cover Understanding Organic Horticulture which looks into the effects of gardening on the Environment and how different methods of management can affect crops. Health and Safety and general skills needed for future employment, completing the course with looking at individual skills and how these can benefit a team, building a small garden structure and evaluating their involvement in the project
